Monte Cook along with Keith Baker Are Instructing Classes at Dungeon Master Academy

Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been running deeply engaging experiences where professional dungeon masters lead D&D games in historic castles in the UK and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. The comprehensive packages are highly favored among long-time dungeon masters who seldom have the moment to actually play themselves, and they often seek advice from the pros on topics ranging from improvisation and puzzle design to managing conflicts at the table.

In response, the planners began crafting a systematic approach to tackle these topics, which led to the creation of Dungeon Master University. The first session is set for the start of 2026 at Oglethorpe University.

“It's possible to view numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and learn quite a lot, but the concept was that nothing truly replaces face-to-face interaction together with peers in game mastering, where direct communication with faculty instructors and your peers who are probably in the same boat and seek to enhance their abilities,” explained the program's dean.

Available Classes and Cost Levels

Game masters can choose from options ranging from $995 to $2,500, based on the level of access they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes a choice of four workshops:

  • Skill Building: Focuses on the essentials of managing a session.
  • Long-Term Game Planning: Centers on designing extended campaigns.
  • Worldbuilding: Highlights the art of setting design.
  • Professional Development: Aimed at game masters who want to learn more about the roleplaying business.

Each course includes multiple sessions of training spread over a weekend.

“The classes are created so that you leave with tangible results, probably greater confidence, and a lot of usable tools,” Carl said. “They’re not just lectures and they go beyond recorded content. These are sessions that you can attend, absorb insights from, and then go right back home the next week and implement in your regular session.”

Professional Teachers

Most classes are taught by duo of instructors. Worldbuilding is taught by the founder of Monte Cook Games and a renowned campaign designer, together instructing the skill of universe design.

Career building presents several experts, such as a puzzle design specialist, an entertainment professional, and an early professional game master. The additional faculty is intended to offer targeted guidance to attendees with definite objectives.

“Certain participants want to launch their own D&D actual play and share their stories with the world, several want to publish and create new material,” Carl stated. “Some just want to ask, What does it take to be a DM at something like D&D in a Castle? Which abilities that I need? Is this achievable?

Premium Packages

A $1,500 premium package provides access to a welcome reception, a introductory package, and a brief one-on-one appointment with a teacher. This constitutes the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.

“One could practically host an full two days just on one-on-one meetings for expert DMs,” Carl observed. “I don’t know if that’s the best use of each attendee's hours – I believe the structured learning and the hands-on activities is highly beneficial – but I think it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”

The $2,500 premium option provides an extended personal consultation and the opportunity to manage an adventure for several participants plus an instructor, who will then give comments and instruction.

“The purpose is for the faculty member to assess whatever the DM is concerned with: Hey I don’t do well with spontaneous decisions or I encounter obstacles in this kind of combat situation. Can I run a situation for you and receive input on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl explained. “Or maybe they want to get feedback and information on a definite universe that they’ve been developing.”

Future Plans

Responses from the inaugural session will help shape upcoming academy workshops. Carl mentioned that potential adjustments could include increasing consultation time, extending the program to 72 hours, or trying out different seminar structures.

“I expect that we host such events frequently,” Carl stated. “I really want to see several DMU sessions in a calendar year, in different cities, and in multiple countries. The feedback has been extremely positive. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I believe it would be fantastic to be able to do this in partnership with major events.”
