Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
